O texto que segue pretende apresentar as características de comércio local e da atuação de comerciantes na cidade de Mariana no século XIX. A circulação interna de mercadorias promoveu a integração de regiões do Brasil e também obteve capacidade de acumulação suficiente para gerar uma elite regional. Aqueles comerciantes estabelecidos em Mariana articulavam a circulação de produção local e de importados, inclusive escravos, além do controle do crédito informal, conferindo-lhes assim certo prestígio social. A comparação entre o perfil e a atuação de negociantes da face urbana da cidade com pequenos empreendimentos no meio rural também podem revelar significativos elementos da estratificação social.

The following text aims to present the characteristics of local businesses and the
performance of traders in the city of Mariana in the nineteenth century. The internal
movement of goods promoted the integration of regions in Brazil and also won
accumulation capacity sufficient to generate a regional elite. Traders Mariana articulating
the movement of local production and imports, including slaves, beyond the control of
informal credit, thereby giving them a certain social prestige. The comparison between the
profile and performance of traders from the face of the town with small businesses in rural
areas may also show significant evidence of social stratification.
