Entre a primeira e a segunda guerras mundais, romancistas, cronistas, ensaístas, sociólogos e jornalistas manifestavam-se e posicionavam-se em torno das contendas políticas internacionais. Na medida em que um novo conflito mundial tornava-se iminente, o descompasso entre a política externa do governo de Getúlio Vargas e o ambiente doméstico autoritário tornaram-se tema de muitos artigos e manifestos destes intelectuais. E, entre as tensões da autonomia criativa e o comprometimento político, intelectuais acabaram por introduzir a cultura como elemento que articulou o papel social que estabeleceram para si mesmos e seu papel de grupo no espaço público. Assim, a proposta aqui é, através das trajetórias de Jorge Amado, Graciliano Ramos, Raquel de Queiroz, José Lins do Rego e Aníbal Machado e o romance que criaram coletivamente (Brandão entre o mar e o amor, 1941-1942), mostrar como as relações entre a opção político-partidária do escritor, sua obra e o contexto político revelam-se, amiúde, de forma sutil.

Between the first and second world war, novelists, columnists, essayists, journalists and sociologists manifested itself and positioned themselves around the international political disputes. To the extent that a new world war became imminent, the gap between the foreign policy of the government of Getúlio Vargas and the home environment authoritarian became the subject of many articles and manifestos of these intellectuals. And tensions between the political commitment and creative autonomy, intellectual culture it was introduced as an element which articulated the social role they have set for themselves and their role in the group of public space. Thus, the proposal here is, through the paths of Jorge Amado, Graciliano Ramos, Rachel de Queiroz, José Lins do Rego and Anibal Machado and romance that collectively created (Brandão entre o mar e o amor, 1941-1942), show how the relationships between the party-political preference of the writer, his work and the political context reveal themselves, often so subtle.
