This study aimed to evaluate the types and quantities of waste produced by the metallurgical companies of the city of Ijuí. The list of 78 metallurgical companies was extracted from the Cadastre of Municipal Tirbutos / 96, provided by the Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Ijuí, however only 40 companies were evaluated. The remainder were closed (14) or were not located (24). The evaluation was performed by questionnaire in situ, in the period from June / 96 to February / 97. The numerical data, referring to the quantities of waste represent, an average monthly value estimated by the companies. The residues produced in greater quantity are: metals, cast sand, office paper and refuse waste. The total amount of waste produced is 48,809 kg / month, of which 14,711 kg / month is recycled. Waste sent for recycling was sold, recycled by the company, or donated. Non-recycled waste (34,098 kg / month) was deposited in vacant lots, burned or sent to the municipal deposit. The sand casting, waste produced in greater quantity, is not being produced more; in this case the total amount of waste produced is 18,809 kg / month, with a recycling percentage of 78%.
