Resumo: Após algumas considerações históricas sobre o mais famoso e utilizado dicioná-rio de língua portuguesa no Brasil, o Novo Dicionário Aurélio, este artigo pretende mostrar algumas lacunas, imprecisões e contradições da obra, depois que passou a ser difundida pela família do autor, muitas vezes sem a necessária revisão, como, por exemplo, no ver-bete ponto e vírgula, que se escrevia com hifens, o que levou o dicionarista a optar por um plural de palavra composta que não se justifica depois da nova ortografia que suprimiu os hifens transformando o substantivo composto em dois substantivos. Este artigo também menciona discussões entre o editor e consulentes que analisaram a obra comentando-lhe as inadequações. O artigo termina condenando a ideia de se incluírem palavras de uso re-cente ao acervo do Dicionário, sem a necessária análise sociolinguística dessas inclusões.

Abstract: After some historical considerations about the most famous and used dictio-nary of Portuguese language in Brazil, the New Aurélio Dictionary, this article intends to show some gaps, inaccuracies and contradictions of the work, after it started to be disse-minated by the author's family, many times without the necessary revision. In the entry se-micolon, for example, which was written with hyphens, the dictionaryist opted for a plural of compound word that is not justified after the new spelling, which suppressed hyphens, transforming the compound noun into two nouns. This article also mentions discussions between the editor and consultants who analyzed the work commenting on its inade-quacies. The article ends by condemning the idea of including recently used words in the dictionary's collection without the necessary sociolinguistic analysis of these inclusions.Key words: Dictionary.
