XX.

This study is a reflection on the relationship between urbanization and schooling based on an examination
of the results of investigation that had as its object the oldest school institutions in the city of Uberlândia,
Minas Gerais, Brazil created and functioning since the first decades of the 20th Century. In Uberlândia,
currently the largest city in the Minas Triangle and Upper Paranaiba Region in Minas Gerais, the process of urbanization and schooling is recent, dating from the beginning of the 20th Century with the founding
of the Gymnásio Mineiro de Uberabinha in 1912, through the initiative of civil society. This was followed
by the Grupo Escolar Bueno Brandão in 1915 through state initiative, as well as the Colégio Nossa
Senhora das Lágrimas in 1932 by the Catholic Church. The process of schooling coincides with the
process of urbanization and the political, economic and cultural establishment of the city in the region. In
this sense, the examination of the specific history of these first school institutions sought to grasp the
central role that the school culture that permeates them had in the long and complex process of denying
rural culture and the educational arrangements then in existence for the purpose of schooling urban
behavior and knowledge among the students. Sources included the pertinent bibliography (dissertations,
books written by historians and authors of memoirs); books that treat the question of local and regional
history; printed, handwritten, and iconographic documentation which exists in school archives, in municipal
public archives, in the Center of Documentation of History at UFU and in various private archives,
and in documents constructed through collecting oral testimony from former directors, teachers and
students (those who concluded and those who dropped out).
