Criada em agosto de 1831,
a Guarda Nacional brasileira teve
como modelo principal a
Garde Nationale
francesa. Inicialmente, a função da Guarda Nacional brasileira era
manter a ordem social, conter as revoltas populares e propiciar a sustentação
do aparelho estatal, a fim de manter
a integridade do Império. Criada
em meio a grandes agitações políticas, logo após a abdicação de Pedro
I (abril de 1831), a Guarda Nacional
foi um instrumento de imensa importância no processo de apaziguamento
dessas revoltas. Este artigo analisa o
processo de formação da Guarda Nacional e a importância que esta teve na
manutenção da ordem na Corte e na
província do Rio de Janeiro durante
a Guerra do Paraguai. Assim como os
pontos inerentes a sua estrutura, funcionamento e atuação.

Created in August 1831,
the National Guard took as its main
model the french Garde Nationale. Initially, the Brazilian National
Guard’s functions were to keep the
social order, to contain the popular
insurgencies, and to propitiate the
maintenance of the State apparatus,
in order to keep the Imperial integrity. Created among political turmoil,
just after the abdication of Pedro I
(April 1831), the National Guard was
an instrument of great importance in
the process of pacification of those
insurgencies. This article analyses the
process of formation of the National
Guard, and the importance of its presence in the maintenance of the order
in Court and in the province of Rio
de Janeiro during the Paraguayan War.

structure, operation, and agency.
