A estrutura da União Europeia resulta da forma como os seus sistemas institucional, jurídico e jurisdicional foram desenhados pelos “pais fundadores” e se manteve, adaptou e evoluiu ao longo do pouco mais meio século da era de paz na Europa que inaugurou. Das Comunidades Europeias passou-se à União Europeia, pois só com a entrada em vigor do Tratado de Lisboa se passou a poder falar apenas de uma União Europeia a que ainda se adiciona a Comunidade Europeia da Energia Atômica.

The structure of the European Union results from the way their systems institutional, legal and judicial systems were designed by the “founding fathers” and remained, adapted and evolved over just over half century of peace in Europe who inaugurated. European Communities passed to the European Union, because only with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty is now able to speak only of a European Union that still adds the European Atomic Energy Community.
