No final do século XIX a Diocese cearense instaurou um processo a fim de investigar a ocorrência de um possÃvel milagre eucarÃstico. Neste trabalho, apresentamos a trajetória da beata Maria de Araújo conjeturando que os depoimentos desta beata estão inseridos em uma tradição mÃstica que tem no Barroco seu ponto alto. Tomando como viés interpretativo a teatralização dos eventos ocorridos com Maria de Araújo, discutimos a partir da sua narrativa, como a experiência religiosa e mÃstica do “corpo sofredor†– enquanto instrumento divino - será traduzida na transformação de Juazeiro como espaço de sacralidade.
In the late nineteenth century the Diocese of Ceará started a process to
investigate the possible occurrence of an Eucharistical miracle related to “beata†Maria
de Araújo. In this article, we present the history of “beata†Maria de Araújo inferring
that the testimonies of this religious woman are inserted in a mystical tradition that has
its high point in the Baroque. Taking the theatricalization as a methodology to
understand the events in which Maria de Araújo was involved, we discuss her narrative.
We consider the religious and mystical experience of “suffering body†- as a divine tool
- that will be reflected in the transformation of Juazeiro as a sacred space.
