This article aims to describe the language competence of Portuguese learners in Mozambique in the domain of inflection of irregular verbs in the present and imperfect of subjunctive. The sample is made up of 60 Grade 7 students from urban, suburban and rural areas. In order to collect data, we opted for the elaboration of an elicitation test. The results of this study reveal that the inflection of irregular verbs in the present and imperfect subjunctive is a complex area for the approached population, although the difficulty degree varies from one area to another. The main learners’ difficulties of learners relate to what appears to be the overgeneralization of regular verbs inflection rule and to the tendency for the choice of different tenses of the indicative mood with particular reference to present in contexts in which they should use the subjunctive.
