O primeiro grupo de observações
celestes feitas por Galileu
com o auxÃlio do telescópio foi publicado
no Sidereus nuncius em 1610.
Nessa obra, ele trata da irregularidade
do relevo lunar, dos satélites de
Júpiter e da possibilidade de observar
estrelas invisÃveis a olho nu. Outro
grupo de observações referentes,
principalmente, Ã s manchas solares,
que constitui a maior evidência
empÃrica de alterações no mundo supra-
lunar, está contido em três cartas
de Galileu a Marco Welser, publicadas
com o nome de Istoria e dimostrazioni
intorno alle macchie solari em 1613. Na
obra, em polêmica com Christoph
Scheiner, o autor apresenta, além do
assunto descrito no tÃtulo e de outras
observações telescópicas, alguns indÃcios
de suas concepções fÃsicas,
cosmológicas e epistemológicas mais
gerais, como, por exemplo, a conservação
do movimento, a disposição e
o comportamento dos astros e a necessidade
da matemática no estudo
da natureza, proporcionando uma
primeira apresentação de algumas
idéias centrais do projeto galileano.
The first series of celestial
observations performed by Galileo
using the telescope was published in
the Sidereus nuncius in 1610. In that
work, he deals with the irregularity
of the moon’s relief, with Jupiter’s
satellites and the possibility of
observing stars that couldn’t be seen
with naked eye. Another series of
observations, mainly related to the
sunspots, which constitutes the
greatest empirical evidence for
changes in the world beyond the
moon, is found in three letters sent to
Marco Welser and published under
the name Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno
alle macchie solari in 1613. In the work,
discussing with Christoph Scheiner,
the author presents, besides the issue
mentioned in the title and other
telescopical observations, some clues
to his more general phisical,
cosmological and epistemological
conceptions, as, for example,
conservation of motion, arrangement
and behavior of the celestial bodies
and the need for mathematics in the
study of nature, providing a first
presentation of some main ideas in
the galilean project.
