A linguística funcional tem como princípio o de que toda a explicação linguística deve ser buscada na relação entre linguagem e uso, ou na linguagem em uso no contexto social, o que torna obrigatória a tarefa de explicar o fenômeno linguístico com base nas relações que, no contexto sociointeracional, contraem falante, ouvinte e a pressuposta informação pragmática de ambos. De acordo com os princípios estabelecidos na Gramática Funcional (Dik, 1997), a Gramática Discursivo-Funcional, que dela deriva e a expande, representa uma abordagem que leva em conta a natureza situada da comunicação linguística e, por isso, apresenta uma explicação da inter-relação entre linguagem e contexto. Esta apresentação propõe mostrar que a Gramática Discursivo-Funcional constitui uma teoria sobre a gramática que tenta refletir as evidências psicolinguísticas em sua arquitetura básica. Apresenta-se como uma teoria que permite aplicação em dados reais de língua, mostrando-se capaz de adequadamente explicá-los, psicológica, tipológica e pragmaticamente. Caracteriza-se, portanto, como um funcionalismo moderado, pois entende que a gramática é moldada pelo uso, mas, em termos sincrônicos, constitui um sistema que deve ser descrito e correlacionado com funções no discurso. Constitui, portanto, uma teoria gramatical que leva em consideração o uso, mas não se constitui como uma teoria do uso.

The Functional Linguistics takes into accountall linguistics explanation must be found in the relationship between language and use, or in the language in use in the social context. This makes the task of explaining the linguistics phenomenon based on the relationship that involves the speaker, the addressee and the presupposed pragmatic information of both, in the social-interactional context. According to the principles established by Functional Grammar (Dik, 1997), the Functional Discourse Grammar, which derives from it and expands it, represents an approach that takes into account the situated nature of the linguistics communication, and because of this, it presents an explanation about the interrelation between language and context. This article proposes to show that the Functional Discourse Grammar constitutes a theory about the grammar which tries to reflect the psycholinguistics evidences in its basic architecture. It is represented as a theory that allows application on real data of language, showing to be able to explain those data psychologically, typologically and 35 pragmatically with adequacy. Therefore, it is characterized as a moderate functionalism, since it is understood that the grammar is made by the use, but, in synchronic terms, constitutes a system that must be described and correlated with functions in the discourse. Therefore, it constitutes a grammatical theory that takes into account the use, but it is not a theory of use.
