Este artigo é resultado de um investimento, ao longo dos últimos anos, em que
realizamos trabalhos, nas áreas de ensino e pesquisa, que fossem capazes de nos
ajudar numa melhor compreensão da realidade. A construção da Usina Hidrelétrica de
Nova Ponte, no Estado de Minas Gerais, foi o marco inicial de nossas preocupações.
Assistimos à destruição de uma cidade, submersa pela formação do reservatório da
usina e, conseqüentemente, a construção de uma nova cidade. Era nossa
preocupação pensar como a execução de um grande projeto poderia alterar
significativamente, e para sempre, o sentido de lugar. O resultado de nossa pesquisa
apenas vem referendar o que já era nosso entendimento: o lugar é uma construção
simbólica, fonte de legitimidade, de identidade, razão da própria vida de um povo.
This paper shows the results of some studies which were conducted in the past years
in the area of teaching and research, with the hope that they would help us to better
understand our own reality. The construction of the Hydroelectric of Nova Ponte, in the
State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, was the initial mark of our preoccupations. We saw a city
to disappear under water, so that the Hydroelectric could have been constructed, while
other city could have been built. However, our worries were how a great project could
later, significantly, and forever, change the sense of that place. The results of our
research attested what we had thought of, that is: the place is a symbolic construction,
a source of legitimacy, identity and the reason for a life time.
