Romola é, frequentemente, considerada uma exceção na obra de George Eliot. Diferentemente de seus três romances anteriores, Romola foi recebido por seus contemporâneos com insatisfação. Apesar do sucesso dos demais livros da autora, seu quarto romance permanece significativamente desconhecido. No entanto, ele é cheio de sutilezas que não se entregam facilmente à compreensão. É importante mencionar que é Romola o romance em que os interesses artÃsticos e sociais de Eliot se unem à s vertentes do seu pensamento literário. O presente artigo investiga as diversas faces mÃticas da protagonista de forma a evidenciar o seu desenvolvimento na trama e o papel que a mitologia desempenha na maneira como a autora manipula as formas do romance e do realismo inglês.

Romola is often considered an exception in the George Eliot’s work. Differently from her three previous novels, Romola was received by its contemporaries with discontent. Despite the success of her other books, her fourth novel remains significantly unknown today. However, it is full of subtleties
which do not surrender easily to comprehension. It is important to note that Romola is the work in which
Eliot’s artistic and social interests join the streams of her literary project. The present article investigates the protagonist’s several mythical faces so as to highlight her development in the plot and the role mythology plays in the way the author handles the forms of the English novel and the English realism.
