Este trabalho utiliza informações históricas e arqueológicas para realizar um estudo sobre a constituição das fronteiras do Reino de Portugal durante os séculos XIII e XIV, tendo como principal referência a arquitetura militar (fortificações). Para uma melhor organização o texto foi divido em três partes. A primeira explica o surgimento, desenvolvimento e importância da Arqueologia Medieval na Península Ibérica. A segunda, tendo em vista atender as características da mesa redonda do “I Encontro Estadual de Estudos Medievais” dedicada a pesquisa, constitui uma descrição da investigação de doutoramento, em arqueologia medieval, desenvolvida pelo autor do presente artigo. Encerrando, a terceira parte, ocupa-se em definir de que forma o castelo pode ser percebido como um documento a ser lido e interpretado.

This work uses historical and archeological information to accomplish a study about the constitution of the borders of the Portugal Kingdom during the centuries XIII and XIV, and it has as main reference the military (fortifications) architecture. For a better organization the text was divided in three parts. The first explains the appearance, development and importance of the Medieval Archeology in the Iberian Peninsula. The second part aims to meet the characteristics of the round table of the "I Encontro Estadual de Estudos Medievais" dedicated to research, and it constitutes a description of the doctorate degree investigation in medieval archeology, developed by the author of the present article. And to finish, the third part has the purpose to define how the castle can be noticed as a document to be read and interpreted.
