Apesar do trabalho de cunho historiográfico realizado pelo o autor, Os sertões é tradicionalmente classificado como reportagem ou literatura. Muitas das simplificações tipológicas estiveram vinculadas às disputas ocorridas entre os letrados brasileiros do início do século XX, principalmente no que tange à construção de uma identidade nacional. Tais literatos perceberam a obra como eminentemente literária. A busca romântica de uma essência nacional encontrou em Os sertões objeto privilegiado. Seu núcleo poético não limita interpretações do texto, que, ao longo da história do Brasil, sempre se abriu a leituras múltiplas vinculadas não somente às análises teóricas, mas também a embates políticos e intelectuais travados entre interlocutores e críticos. Assim, o estudo proposto contribui no sentido de analisar referido o livro sob um olhar teórico e historiográfico.

Although the work of historiographic stamp conducted by the author, The
sertões is traditionally classified as reportage or literature. Many of the typological
simplifications were linked to disputes arising between Brazilian “intellectuals” of the early
twentieth century, particularly with regard to the construction of a national identity. Such
“intellectuals” realized the book as literature. The search of a romantic national essence
found in The sertões privileged object. The text does not limit poetic interpretations of the
book. Throughout the history of Brazil, it has always opened to multiple readings linked
not only to theoretical analyses, but also the political and intellectual shocks between
interlocutors and critics. So, the proposed study helps to analyse The sertões under a
theoretical and historiographic point of view.
