This text presents a contemporary reading about the painting Study marine landscape with rain clouds, 1824, John Constable (1776-1837), by taking into account two critical-conceptual categories: the image and the landscape. To historically contextualize the work that would have been one of the forerunners of Impressionism, this paper describes under what conditions was developed this visual study and the importance of nature and the countryside in this period. This situation, somehow permeates the European view of Romanticism, both in literature (poetry in particular) and in painting. Theoretical frameworks are Kenneth Clark (1961) and Keith Thomas (1989).
