Investigo neste texto algumas imagens da Amazônia pintadas no relato de
viagem The Sea and the Jungle, do escritor inglês H. M. Tomlinson. Minha
argumentação é que essa narrativa retrata o nativo como um ser de outro mundo, como
em um sonho, ou seja, como a antÃtese do europeu. Viajando apenas como um olho
desencarnado, uma seing mind, este viajante e peregrino, numa fuga apressada da
cidade de Londres, canta as paisagens amazônicas de uma forma sublime. Entretanto,
quando se refere ao nativo, algumas exasperações de uma tendência voltada para a
etnocentria, o racismo e todas outras formas disfarçadas de xenofobias são reforçadas.
I investigate in this text some images of Amazon depicted in the travel
writting The Sea and the Jungle, writen by H. M. Tomlinson. My argumentation is that
this narrative depicts the native as a being from Other world, like in a dream, I mean, as
an antithesis of an European. Traveling as only an desimbodied eye, a seing mind, this
traveller and peregrin, in a scape from London city, sings the Amazon landscapes in a
sublime way. Yet when he refers to the native some exasperation of an etnocentric
tendency, racism and all others unveil ways of xenophobies are reinforced.
