Este trabalho tem por objetivo a discussão da Área Central na perspectiva de analisá-la como um instrumento teórico-metodológico relevante na construção de reflexões, olhares e leituras sobre a cidade. Nesse sentido, o estudo do processo de segregação socioespacial tomou uma direção referenciada pela presença de atividades comerciais e de serviços, bem como seus usos e localizações distintas atendendo em primeiro plano a uma camada social privilegiada. Mostrou-se que a elite dominante na cidade cria seus próprios centros de negócios e serviços, institui o direcionamento das políticas públicas urbanas, conduzindo assim, de maneira a lhe interessar, o processo de produção e de reprodução do espaço urbano. Buscou-se com isto trazer à tona uma discussão sobre a cidade projetada nos diferentes níveis sociais na perspectiva do exercício de poder que a classe dominante mantém e que se expressa, principalmente, na sua capacidade de consumo, de domínio e de articulação que constrói com o espaço urbano e por seu turno com a cidade.

This work has for objective discussion of the Central Area in the perspective to analyze it as an instrument of theoretical and methodological relevant in the construction of reflections, looks and readings on the city. In this sense, the study of the process of social and spatial segregation took a direction referenced by the presence of commercial activities and services, as well as its uses and different locations given in the foreground to a privileged social layer. It was shown that the ruling elite in the city creates its own business centers and services, establishing the direction of urban public policies, thus leading, so that interest you, the process of production and reproduction of urban space. Sought with this bring up a discussion about the city designed in the different social levels in the exercise of power perspective that the ruling class maintains and which is expressed mainly in its ability to consumption, domain and link building with urban space and in turnwith the city
