The article makes a bibliographic balance of the most relevant production on the public celebrations in the social sciences and in historiography, pointing out its main characteristics and its importance for the study of Brazil. It also discusses how the understanding of the theory of "festivals" contributes to the understanding of Brazilian nationality from a cultural perspective.
