INSTRUIR E DISCIPLINAR: LITERATURA ESCOLAR PRODUZIDA POR JERÔNIMO ARANTES EM UBERLÂNDIA/MG, 1938-1939*

Esse artigo discute os livros escolares escritos por Jerônimo Arantes em Uberlândia/MG durante
os anos de 1938 e 1939. Neste período, o referido autor escreveu a Cartilha brasileira, Minha escola
modelo,Meu aprendizado agrícola e Minha rica fazenda; os três últimos destinados ao ensino rural. Para
a realização desta investigação consultamos os quatro livros citados, os jornais e revistas do
período em questão, correspondência pessoal do autor e também a bibliografia específica
referente ao tema. Nosso objetivo foi apreender as representações engendradas por esta literatura
e as relações estabelecidas entre o conteúdo explorado nestes livros e a formação da sociedade
de Uberlândia no que diz respeito à questão do processo de ordenamento social. Concluímos
que os livros em questão reiteraram a necessidade de instituir a disciplina entre os alunos,
transmitiram valores patrióticos e propagaram noções de positividade do trabalho.

This article aims at discussing the books written by Jerônimo Arantes in Uberlândia/MG between
1938 -1939. In this period, the author wrote Cartilha Brasileira, Minha Escola Modelo, Meu
Aprendizado Agrícola and Minha Rica Fazenda. The last three were addressed to the rural
teaching. In order to carry out such a research, the books mentioned were checked as well as the
newspapers and magazines of the period studied. Jerônimos personal mailing and the specific
references concerned to the subject were also considered. By doing so, we were able to undertake
the representations engendered by this literature and identify the relation between the content of
the books and the formation of the local society of Uberlândia. We found out that Jerônimos
writings had such an influence on the formation of this society, especially to what concerns the
social order, which institutes discipline among students and the transmission of patriotic values
and conceptions of work as a positive value, too.
