Mass media use tables and charts to present statistical information. Therefore, the competence of reading and interpreting this type of representations adequately and critically is necessary for citizens. This work explores the interpretation of a table and a pie chart by 36 college students and compares whether the type of representation makes them exhibit a higher level of reading, considering Curcio’s levels for comprehension and the hierarchy proposed by Aoyama for a critical evaluation of information. In general, the participants show level two, reading between the data, when comparing data. Around a fourth of thestudents who read the table reached levels three and four, reading beyond the data and reading behind the data, respectively.
Los medios de comunicación hacen uso de tablas y gráficas para presentar información estadística; por ello, una competencia necesaria para la ciudadanía es la capacidad de leer e interpretar este tipo de representaciones adecuada y críticamente. En este trabajo se explora la interpretación de una tabla y una gráfica circular por 36 estudiantes de licenciatura, y se compara si el tipo de representación influye para que se presente un nivel de lectura superior; considerando los niveles de Curcio para la comprensión, y la jerarquía de Aoyama para la valoración crítica de la información. En general, los estudiantes muestran el nivel 2, leer dentro de los datos, al realizar una comparación con los datos; y la lectura de la tabla propició que alrededor de la cuarta parte de los estudiantes alcanzaran los niveles 3 y 4, leer más allá de los datos y leer detrás de los datos, respectivamente.
