Em A Invenção da Amazônia, o intuito principal de Neide Gondim é desconstruir a ideia de Amazônia enquanto espaço descoberto ou construído. Em vez disso, a autora apresenta uma Amazônia inventada, formada pelo imaginário de viajantes, cronistas e aventureiros. Gondim mostra um espaço que por vezes é encarado como Paraíso, um lugar repleto de belezas e riquezas naturais, mas que também é visto como Inferno, espaço do infortúnio e de clima hostil. Enfim, através dos relatos e descrições desses viajantes mergulhamos rumo ao entendimento das representações construídas sobre o Outro e também compreendemos as subjetividades que esses intérpretes carregavam.

In A Invenção da Amazônia the main purpose of Neide Gondim is to deconstruct the idea of the Amazon region as a discovered or constructed place. In this perspective, the writer presents an invented Amazon formed by the imagery currency according to some travelers, chroniclers and adventurers. She describes a place that is sometimes seen as Paradise with abundant beauties and natural richness, but also considered as Hell, place of misfortune and hostile atmosphere. Then, through the narratives and descriptions produced by these people, the readers are involved themselves deeply in a particular way of understanding in relation to the representations which are built about the Other and to the subjectivities carried out by these interpreters.
