This article offers a selective review of scientific writing over the last forty year about linguistic variations in modern Galician. The publication of the Atlas Lingüístico Galego was taken as the starting point, given its key importance for the development and knowledge of Galician in both Galician academia and the international scientific community. Studies are presented in three sections: dialectology and linguistic geography, variationist sociolinguistics, and language contact. The authors set out to provide a broad overview of the major lines of research and main approaches that have been influential in the field in the period covered.
