Em junho de 1970, o jornalista norte-americano Hunter S Thompson publica uma reportagem nada convencional sobre um evento de turfe na cidade de Louisville que inauguraria o estilo que ficou conhecido como Jornalismo Gonzo. Poucos anos depois, veio a consagração literária de Thompson e do estilo com a obra Medo e Delírio em Las Vegas. No entanto, antes de ser chamado de Gonzo, o jornalista já trabalhava o seu estilo pessoal atuando como correspondente internacional na América Latina pelo jornal National Observer. Assim, o artigo observa algumas das características dos textos publicados nesse periódico que antecederam o surgimento do jornalismo gonzo, com ênfase na passagem do então novato repórter pelo Brasil.

In June of 1970, the American journalist Hunter S Thompson publishes an unconventional story on a horse race in the city of Louisville that would kick off the style that would be later known as gonzo journalism. A few years later, Thompson and his new style would be consecrated, from the literary point of view, by the publication of his work Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. However, before being called gonzo, the journalist already worked his personal style acting as an international correspondent in Latin America to the newspaper National Observer. Thus, this research paper observes some of the characteristics of the texts that were published in this periodical, preceeding the emergence of gonzo journalism, with emphasis on the presence of the beginner reporter in Brazil.
