Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar algumas questões acerca da ‘história’ da leitura por meio de José de Alencar: escritor, político e crítico que viveu no século XIX. Com base nessa perspectiva são analisados, concisamente, alguns discursos acerca da leitura oitocentista, bem como os locais de leitura existentes nesse período. Para isso, são utilizados, além do instrumental oferecido pela ‘história da leitura’, escritos do próprio autor que relatam a leitura oitocentista.
This article aims to analyze some questions about the ‘history’ of reading through the eyes of José de Alencar: a writer, politician and critic who lived in the 19th century. Based on this perspective, some discourses about nineteenth-century reading are concisely analyzed, as well as the places where reading existed during this period. To this end, in addition to the tools offered by the ‘history of reading’, writings by the author himself that describe nineteenth-century reading are used.
