O presente artigoaborda a instituição de órgãos de polícia como representantes do poder e da autoridade do Estado sob a ótica da filosofia, sobretudono contexto do contrato social, fundamentada em revisão bibliográfica. Ainda que o homem tenha preterido sua liberdade natural em prolde uma liberdade assistida, e sendo a polícia um dos órgãos responsáveis por essa assistência, não há como afirmar que esse trabalho está correspondendo aos anseios da sociedade, sobretudo ao se analisar os índices de violência que a envolvem. Nesse sentido, a sociedade vem questionando a necessidade da existência dessas instituições, muitas vezes, inclusive, pedindo sua extinção.
This paper discusses the establishment of police agencies as representatives of the power and authority of the State from the standpoint of philosophy, especially in the context of the social contract, based on literature review. Even though man has given up his natural libertyin favour of assisted freedom, and the police are one of the bodies responsible for this assistance, there is no way to affirm that this work is meeting society's expectations, especially when we analyse the rates of violence that surround it. In this sense, society has been questioning the need for the existence of these institutions, often even asking for their extinction.
