The article offers a complete review of the social situation of the Galician language, starting with a short history of its contact with Castilian and focusing specifically on the sociolinguistic changes of the last decades, after its officialization as the “particular language” of the Autonomous Community of Galicia. The paper presents and analyzes statistical data on the most relevant sociolinguistic and social variables (mother language, language competence, usual language), presents a synthesis of the standardization process and comments on the normative controversies and their social effects and the diversity of linguistic practices and representations that emerged as a consequence of the contact with Castilian in this complex scenario of political interventions on status and on the corpus of the Galician language.
