A LITERATURA ESTÁ EM CRISE?

Neste ensaio, pretendo discutir uma questão polêmica sobre a crise na e da Literatura, a partir das reflexões de Mário Vargas Llosa e Antonio Candido, bem como revisitar o conceito do que é Literatura, ao tomar como referencial as ponderações de João Alexandre Barbosa, que fundamenta sua argumentação nas postulações de Northrop Frye, Fernando Pessoa e T. S. Eliot. A partir desse referencial teórico, pretendo debater acerca da tensão existente entre o literário e o comércio livreiro atual no Brasil, a partir de pesquisas realizadas em três livrarias que disponibilizam seus catálogos online – Livraria Saraiva, Livraria Cultura e Livraria da Travessa – e, com base nos dados obtidos por meio das listas dos livros mais vendidos, ou mais populares, conjecturar sobre a questão proposta inicialmente: há uma crise na Literatura? Tal indagação percorrerá toda a discussão, com base também na querela do fim do livro, hipótese cogitada, no século XIX, por Machado de Assis, diante do advento do jornal e, atualmente por Bill Gattes, dono da Microsoft, que pretende, antes de morrer, ver o fim do livro.

In this essay I intend to discuss a controversial issue about the crisis in and of Literature, from the reflections of Mario Vargas Llosa and Antonio Candido, and revisit the concept of what Literature is, to be guided by the points of view of João Alexandre Barbosa, who based their arguments on postulates of Northrop Frye, Fernando Pessoa and T. S. Eliot. From this theoretical reference, I intend to debate about the tension between the literary and book trade today in Brazil, based on research carried out in three bookstores that offer their catalogs online - Saraiva, Culture and Library Bookstore Lane and, based on data obtained through the bestseller lists, or more popular books, to conjecture about the question first proposed: Is there a crisis in Literature? This quest will cover the whole discussion, based also on the squabble of the end of the book, the hypothesis thought in the nineteenth century, by Machado de Assis, before the advent of the newspaper and now by Bill Gattes, owner of Microsoft, who intends, before his death, to see the end of the book.
