Trabalha-se a dualidade existencial vivida por Maria/Lúcia, personagem principal do romance romântico Lucíola, de José de Alencar: corpo e alma, matéria e espírito, bem e mal, pureza e impureza. Evidencia-se o problema da evolução da personagem que nasce Maria da Glória, vive como Lúcia e morre Lucíola, nome este atribuído a ela, postumamente, pela senhora G.M., editora do romance, pseudônimo de Alencar. Objetiva-se apresentar uma análise introdutória à obra, percorrendo os conflitos existenciais da personagem principal, que não se perdoa por ter deixado de ser a pura e virginal “Maria da Glória” e ter se tornado a “Lúcia”, a cortesã. É necessário conhecer o autor e sua vasta produção, situando-o em seu contexto social e literário; depois, conhecer a abra e seu enredo, evidenciando as características que fazem dela um romance romântico, feminino e urbano; por fim, faz-se uma análise interpretativa da obra, evidenciando os elementos-chave necessários para uma compreensão da crítica do autor à sociedade de sua época. Esta pesquisa se justifica pela relevância de Alencar e de sua obra para o romantismo brasileiro, bem como pela necessidade de oferecer aos leitores iniciantes instrumentos necessários a uma adequada aproximação ao texto original. Para se atingir os objetivos aqui propostos, faz-se uma leitura crítica da obra, com apoio de especialistas

The existential duality experienced by Maria/Lucia, the main character in the romantic novel "Lucíola" by José de Alencar, is explored: body and soul, matter and spirit, good and evil, purity and impurity. The issue of the character's evolution is highlighted as she is born as Maria da Glória, lives as Lucia, and dies as Lucíola, a name given to her posthumously by G.M., the editor of the novel and a pseudonym for Alencar. The aim is to present an introductory analysis of the work, examining the character's existential conflicts as she struggles to forgive herself for no longer being the pure and virginal "Maria da Glória" and becoming "Lúcia", the courtesan. It is necessary to understand the author and his extensive body of work, placing him in his social and literary context; then, to become familiar with the work and its plot, highlighting the characteristics that make it a romantic, feminine, and urban novel; finally, an interpretive analysis of the work is conducted, highlighting the key elements necessary for an understanding of the author's critique of society at the time. This research is justified by the importance of Alencar and his work for Brazilian romanticism, as well as the need to provide beginner readers with the necessary tools for a proper approach to the original text. To achieve the proposed objectives, a critical reading of the work is conducted with the support of experts.
