O presente artigo objetiva percorrer a obra de NiklasLuhmann, em particular a teoria dos sistemas desenvolvida pelo autor alemão, com o intuito de verificar a procedência das críticas feitas a ele no que se refere ao entendimento da esfera pública e ao processo democrático. Inicialmente procurou-se apresentar o modelo de comunicação do autor alemão estabelecendo as principais diferenças em relação aos modelos tradicionais. Em seguida, buscou-se apresentar a função desses meios de comunicação na perspectiva de Luhmann. Ao final verificou-seque o autor não só contempla as possibilidades de ampliação da esfera pública,criadas a partir das novas tecnologias, como também apresentao papel que os meios de comunicação têm neste cenário.
This article aimed to scroll through the work of NiklasLuhmann, in particular the theory of the systems developed by the German author, with in order to check the correctness of criticism of him in relation to the understanding of the public sphere and the democratic process. Initially we tried to present the communication model of the German author establishing the main differences compared to traditional models. Then we tried to present the function of these media in Luhmann's perspective. At the end found that the author not only offers the options for expanding the public sphere, created from new technologies, but also presents the role that the media play in this scenario.
