A plantation, no nordeste brasileiro, é introduzida após a invasão portuguesa, no início do século XVI. O cultivo da cana de açúcar vai ser inserido na zona da mata e os engenhos vão se espalhando pelo território canavieiro. Para dar suporte a esses engenhos, a produção de alimentos se desenvolverá no agreste e a pecuária bovina no sertão, dessa forma o interior vai sendo ocupado, especialmente no atual território alagoano. Será a partir desta abordagem que o presente trabalho se desenvolverá. O objetivo é apresentar resultados da primeira etapa de uma pesquisa sobre a formação das cidades, através de levantamentos documentais em cartórios, igrejas e órgãos públicos. Assim, constatou-se a importância do tropeirismo, que será fundamental para o surgimento das feiras livres e, consequentemente, das cidades do agreste. Da mesma forma, as fazendas de gado serão o marco inicial da ocupação dos municípios do sertão alagoano.

Plantation, in northeastern Brazil, is introduced after the Portuguese invasion in the early sixteenth century. The cultivation of sugarcane will be inserted into the forest área anf the mills are spreading through the sugar cane territory. To support these mills, food production will develop in the wild and cattle ranching in the hinterland, thus the interior is being occupied, especially in the current Alagoas territory. It will be from this approach that this work will develop. The objective is to presente results of the frist stage of a research on the formation of cities, through documentar surveys in notaries, churches and public agencies. Thus, it was verified the importance of tropeirismo, which will be fundamental for the emergence of free fairs and, consequently, of the cities of the wild. Similarly, cattle farms will be the initial milestone of the occupation of the municipalities of the Alagoas hinterland.
