Antiretroviral drugs were created during the 1980s, with the purpose of preventing the spread of the virus in the body. They are not able to eradicate HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, but they help to prevent the immune system from being weakened. Because of this, its use is essential to increase the time and quality of life of those who have the disease. Therefore, this scientific article seeks to discuss antiretroviral drugs in the treatment of HIV, with the purpose of analyzing how these drugs act by inhibiting viral replication and the infection of new cells by the respective condition. In order to reach this proposed objective, it was necessary to define the specific objectives: a) Identify which antiretroviral drugs are and how they would work in patients with HIV; b) Describe its mechanisms of action in the fight against HIV; and c) Analyze the pharmaceutical follow-up with the patient in the use of antiretroviral drugs. Regarding the methodology, to answer the problem, qualitative research was chosen, as for the purposes it will be descriptive and as for the bibliographic and documentary means.
