Atmospheric aerosol samples were collected continuously from July 1992 to December 1995 in the city of Cuiabá, located in the Brazilian cerrado, south of the Amazonian basin, Brazil. The sampling device consisted of a fine and coarse sampled material (AFG ), which separates the coarse fraction (2.5-10 μm of equivalent aerodynamic diameter) from the fine fraction of the aerosol (<2.5μm). The fine and coarse particulate matter of all the sampled filters (180 in total) were analyzed for particulate matter (MP), blackcarbon (BC) and for 47 chemical elements. The analyzes of main components and absolute main components were used to identify emission sources. Multielement analysis was performed with a combination of PIXE and INAA. Three major types of aerosol sources have been identified: biomass burning, biogenic emissions, and soil dust suppression. During the dry season, the fine fraction of the aerosol originated predominantly from the emissions of the burning mass (they were responsible for about 64% of the fraction of the fine fraction), while the coarse fraction was dominated by dust particles (50 to 60% of the mass aerosol). During the wet season the biogenic aerosols were the predominant types of particles. while the coarse fraction was dominated by dust particles (50 to 60% of the aerosol mass).
