A atuação dos profissionais de saúde, como é o caso do cirurgião-dentista, em procedimentos invasivos nos serviços prestados aos sujeitos acometidos de doenças crônicas como o Diabetes Mellitus tipo I, depende, muitas vezes, de um bom controle da glicemia. Se o sujeito não possui histórico de bom autocontrole glicêmico, sempre ficará a dúvida para o profissional de saúde quanto à complexidade do tratamento e à possibilidade da oferta do serviço. O objetivo deste trabalho é relatar a experiência da atuação conjunta de profissionais da saúde no atendimento de um grupo de crianças/adolescentes acometidos de diabetes tipo I. Este relato apresenta a experiência da integração ensino-serviço-comunidade, vivenciado por profissionais da academia de Odontologia, Farmácia, Medicina e Serviço Social, por meio de dois projetos de extensão, cujo objetivo principal consistiu em manter a saúde geral e oral de crianças e adolescentes portadores de Diabetes Mellitus tipo I com ênfase na educação para saúde. Esta experiência trouxe benefícios para o paciente, aprimorando o engajamento para o autocuidado, e, para a academia, ampliou os espaços de oportunidades para a troca de conhecimentos entre docentes e discentes.

As in the case of dental surgeons, health professionals’ performance of invasive procedures in people with chronic diseases, such as Type I Diabetes Mellitus, often depends on a controlled blood glucose level. If the patient does not efficiently control his blood sugar level, the health professional will always have doubts regarding the complexity of the treatment and the possibility of providing or not health care. The aim of this study is to report the experience of health professionals that worked together in the care of a group formed by children and young adults with type I diabetes. This report contains the experience of the integration between teaching, service and community. It was experienced by professionals of the Dentistry, Pharmacy, Medicine and Social Service academies through two extension projects, which had as main goal to maintain oral and general health of children and teenagers with type I Diabetes Mellitus, giving emphasis on education for health. This experience has brought benefits to the patients, enhanced the engagement for self-care and, for the academy, expanded the opportunities for the knowledge exchange between teachers and students.
