Este artigo problematiza narrativas acerca de crimes praticados por prepostos do Estado, militares de carreira do Estado do Maranhão que, sob o manto protetor da ordem, praticaram, ou permitiram que se praticasse, crimes com requintes de crueldade na virada do século XIX para o XX. Ao apresentar e problematizar esses crimes, partimos do princípio de que o ordenamento político e militar nesse Estado pressupunha formas específicas de violência que, em última instância, constituíram uma cultura de violência nesse período. Trata-se de uma leitura interpretativa da narrativa jornalística de João Parsondas de Carvalho em torno de crimes praticados na região dos vales dos rios Araguaia e Tocantins, tomando-se como fio condutor da análise a relação entre história e memória.
This article discusses the narrative about crimes committed by agents of the State, the military career of the state of Maranhão that, under the mantle of the order, practiced, or allowed to practice crimes with refinements of cruelty at the turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth. To submit and problematize these crimes we assume that the political and military in these states at the turn of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the XX presupposed specific forms of violence which, ultimately, they formed a culture of violence in this period. The analysis was taken through the interpretation of narrative journalism of the journalist John Parsondas Oak about such crimes taking as conductor of analysis the relationship between history and memory. The crimes dealt here occurred in the region of the valleys of the rivers and Araguaia Tocantins.
