O presente texto discute a construção histórica da noção de dignidade humana, contemplando desde as primeiras justificativas da preeminência do homem no mundo elaboradas pelo monoteÃsmo hebraico até a filosofia moderna kantiana, destacando sua relevância no entendimento dos direitos humanos, compreendidos não como um universal cultural, mas sim como princÃpios morais e preceitos legais necessários à construção de uma sociedade verdadeiramente democrática.
This paper discusses the historical construction of the concept of human dignity, looking from the first justification of the primacy of man in the world prepared by the Hebraic monotheism to the modern Kantian philosophy, stressing its importance in the understanding of human rights, understood not as a universal cultural but as a moral and legal principles needed to build a truly democratic society.
