Este artículo analiza cambios de la laicidad en el contexto de evolución de las novedades
de la modernidad en el periodo que va desde el fin del siglo XIX hasta el inicio del XXI.
Se toma como referencia de análisis el caso francés, sin limitarse a él. Trata del paso
de una comprensión optimista de la historia, de la modernidad triunfante que relegó
la religión a una reliquia de una época superada, a una modernidad dudosa e indecisa.
Se discuten los efectos de ese cambio en el lugar ocupado por la religión. Entramos en
tiempos de movimiento e incerteza, donde todo cambia sin cesar. Transformaciones que
crean expectativas por nuevas certezas simbólicas ofrecidas, en otra época, por la religión.

New Modernity, New Laity. The French Republic versus
Religion (1880 – 2009)
Abstract
This article examines the laity changes in the context of the evolution of New Modernity
during the period from the end of the 19th century till the 21st century. Reference is
made to the French case, without however, be limited by it. It deals with the transition
of the optimistic understanding of history, of triumphant modernity that banished
religion as a surpassed memento to a hesitant and undefined modernity. The effects
of this change are discussed, which now stands in for religion. We are entering an era
of movement and uncertainty, of constant modification; transformations that create an
expectation for new symbolic certainties previously provided by religion.

Résumé
Cet essai analise le passage de l’Occident, avec la France en son sein, d’une modernité
triomphante à une modernité hésitante. On vivait hier dans « le mouvement et la certitude ».
Une conception optimiste de l’histoire. La formule a changé : nous sommes entrés dans
le temps du « mouvement et de l’incertitude ». Tout se déplace sans cesse. On comprend dès lors que la place du religieux ait pu se modifier. La modernité optimiste le réduisait à n’être que le reliquat d’une époque révolue. La modernité indécise la replace. Les transformations de la laïcité française renvoient sans doute, au bout du compte, à cette attente d’une nouvelle sécurité symbolique.
