O cacau na literatura regional do sul da Bahia: ícone de diferenças socio-espaciais

O uso da literatura nos trabalhos geográficos permite avaliar a
originalidade e a personalidade dos lugares e fornecer exemplos
de apreciação pessoal das paisagens. Em 1972, a União Geográfica
Internacional (UGI) realizou uma sessão sobre a utilização de romances
regionais para o ensino da geografia; em 1974, no encontro anual
da Associação dos Geógrafos Americanos, teve lugar uma reunião
sobre as paisagens na literatura; em 1979, o Instituto dos Geógrafos
Britânicos dedicou um de seus encontros anuais às relações gerais entre a Geografia e a Literatura. Daí em diante o movimento estava bem estabelecido (CORRÊA; ROSENDAHL, 2007). A paisagem cacaueira do
sul da Bahia transita na literatura regional de há muito, dando cores e vida aos personagens que povoam os romances, cordéis, poesias, músicas, trovas. Neste artigo estão em foco os principais autores que, em seus escritos, tiveram como personagem principal o cacau, responsável pelas mudanças socioespaciais da região sul da Bahia. Contudo, será dada maior ênfase à literatura jorgeamadiana, por
entender que Jorge Amado, com seus romances, não só apresentou a região ao Brasil, mas ao mundo.

The use of literature in the geographical studies permits the
assessment of the originality and personality of specific places, as well
as the provision of examples of personal appreciation of landscapes. In
1972, the International Geographic Union (IGU) held a session on using
novels from certain regions of the country to teach geography; in 1974,
a meeting about the landscape in literature took place at the annual
convention of the American Geographers Association; in 1979, the
British Geographers Institute dedicated one of its annual meetings to
the general correlation between Geography and Literature. Thereafter
the movement was well established (CORREA; ROSENDAHL, 2007).
The cocoa landscape of southern Bahia has been constantly described
in the regional literature, giving color and life to the characters that live
in the novels, “cordel”, poetry, music, “trovas”. This article is focused
in the authors that had the cocoa as their main character, which is
responsible for the socio-spatial changes in the southern region of
Bahia. However, greater emphasis will be given to the “jorgeamadiana”
literature, based on the well-known fact that Jorge Amado, through
his novels, has not only introduced the southern Bahia to Brazil, but
also to the world.
