Resumo Português:
Objetivo: Contextualizar a enfermagem frente às suas origens e ao desenvolvimento de sua prática. Método:
Estudo teórico, reflexivo, de perspectiva histórica e que utiliza a pesquisa bibliográfica como recurso de
investigação. Resultados: O texto perpassa pelas origens do cuidado ligadas à religiosidade, a perda da hegemonia
da igreja quando as religiosas foram expulsas dos hospitais, a figura de Florence Nightingale como precursora
da enfermagem moderna e a enfermagem e suas origens no Brasil, frisando o exercício formal da enfermagem
com a Lei nº 7.498/86. Conclusões: O saber vem articulado a uma historicidade, sendo que esta pode e deve
ser desvelada, mas nunca negada. As profissões se constroem de maneira progressiva, e conhecer a história da
enfermagem é necessário para conduzir seus próximos passos, visando o reconhecimento e a valorização da
profissão.
Resumo Inglês:
Objective: To contextualize nursing regarding its origin and development of its practice, providing reflections
on the stereotypes that permeate the profession. Methods: This is a reflective study of historical perspective,
which uses the bibliographic search as an investigation method. Results: The findings underlie the origins of
care related to religion, loss of hegemony of the church when the religious women were expelled from hospitals,
the role of Florence Nightingale as pioneer of modern nursing, and nursing origins in Brazil, emphasizing
the lawful exercise of the profession with the Law no. 7498/86. Conclusion: This study reaffirmed the idea of
knowledge articulated to a history, and this can and should be unveiled, but never denied. Professions are built
in a progressive manner, and knowing the history of nursing is needed to conduct its next steps, aiming the
recognition and appreciation of the profession.
