Resumo Inglês:

This article aims to discuss the manner (s) in which the scientific discourse that was highlighted in Europe reaches the Amazon of the nineteenth century and becomes part of a set of colonization mechanisms. Faced with a scenario in which they sought to unravel the mysteries about the origin of species and, in Brazil, to define national identity, we start from the problem that this discourse weaves theories based on imperialist and racist ideas that influenced and influence the construction of a space represented by late and composed of wild individuals. The Amazon will occupy will draw the attention of old world civilizations, since those who held control of this immense region rich in natural resources and a possible workforce meant being at the top of theimperialist system. To understand how this scientific discourse gains prominence and legitimizes colonizing actions, we analyze the works of some intellectuals such as Lilian Schwarcz (1993), Hideraldo Costa (2013), Neide Gondim (2019) and Márcio Souza (2019). As well as revisiting the productions of one of the travelers who was in the Amazon during this period and produced a vast material about the region, Henry Walter Battes (1848-1859). Throughout this study, it is noted how these discourses built on the first fruits of science will become the basis for justifications for actions of domination and colonization of space and the Amazonian being.
