A dança esportiva em cadeira de rodas surgiu no Brasil no ano de 2001, com a realização do I Simpósio Internacional de Dança em Cadeira de Rodas. Pela iniciativa de pesquisadores, reuniram-se diversos grupos de pessoas com deficiência de todo país, com o intuito de se apresentar uma nova modalidade esportiva culturalmente européia. Desde então, a Confederação Brasileira de Dança em Cadeira de Rodas, instituída no mesmo momento, organiza anualmente o Campeonato Brasileiro de Dança Esportiva em Cadeira de Rodas. Embora se trate de um fato no tempo presente, impõe-se a necessidade de se escrever a história dessa modalidade no Brasil, uma vez que, pelos registros históricos de diversos países, em cada um ela se constituiu de forma diferente. Tomando como ponto de partida tal necessidade, o objetivo da pesquisa foi, utilizando-se da metodologia da história oral, registrar como se constituiu esse esporte, a partir da memória dos atletas que participam da modalidade desde 2002.
The dancing in wheelchair sports began in Brazil in 2001, with the realization of the First International Symposium on Dance in wheelchair. Through researchers met several groups of people with disabilities throughout the country with the intention of presenting a new sport culturally European. Since then, the Confederation of Brazilian Dance in Wheelchair, instituted at the same time, annually organizes the Brazilian Championship Dance Sport Wheelchair. Although this is a story of the present time there is a need to write the history of this sport, since this is recorded in several countries and each site is formed differently. Based on this need, the research objective was to show the history of the establishment of the sport from the memory of the athletes who participate in the mode of 2002 using the methodology of oral history
