Uma das características marcantes do município de Foz do Iguaçu-PR é a diversidade linguística. Apesar da fronteira com Argentina e Paraguai e do multilinguismo presente na região, a língua estrangeira preferencialmente ensinada no ensino fundamental das escolas públicas é o inglês, língua que adquiriu o status de língua franca internacional e cujos domínios no município estão voltados ao turismo e relações internacionais. Este texto traz reflexões acerca da oferta do inglês como língua estrangeira predominante nas escolas, considerando as atitudes com relação à língua, a política para a implantação do espanhol na Educação Básica e as demandas da Tríplice Fronteira.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Foz do Iguaçu city, located in Paraná state, Brazil, is the linguistic diversity. In spite of the frontier with Argentina and Paraguay as well as the multilingualism of such region, English is the foreign language predominantly taught in the elementary public schools, due to the status of international lingua franca, and whose domains in the city are related to tourism and international relations. This article aims to discuss the offering and promotion of English as a leading foreign language in the schools, by taking into consideration the language attitudes, the policies for implementation of Spanish in regular education and the needs of the Three-Frontier context.
