O desespero, segundo Anti-Climacus, fundamenta-se na síntese em que é composto o espírito. O si-mesmo é composto de uma relação consigo mesmo e dentro dessa relação encontra-se a tensão dialética entre os polos da finitude e infinitude, do temporal e eterno, da liberdade e necessidade, isto é, relações sintéticas inacabadas e desarticuladas. Assim sendo, a síntese necessita de um terceiro que a fundamente, e este terceiro na relação, segundo Johannes Climacus, é o Mestre, que é a dadiva e o télos do desequilíbrio da relação sintética. Para tal, o Mestre como é a verdade, e a condição para obtê-la, é a concreção motriz para a superação do desespero do Eu escravo da síntese inacabada.
