O artigo tem como objetivo analisar brevemente o histórico regionalista mundial e discutir a atual fase do regionalismo contemporâneo na América do Sul em particular. Consideramos que o novo milênio observa a ascensão de um sistema de poder na região cujas características se misturam com aquelas propostas pelo novo regionalismo pós-liberal. A integração baseada em aspectos políticos, econômicos e militares, além da comunhão ideológica dos países vizinhos, vem formando uma ideia de América do Sul unitária que pensa em seu próprio desenvolvimento e segurança, evitando a participação de potências alheias ao subcontinente.
The article aims to analyze briefly the world regionalist history and discuss the current status of contemporary regionalism in South America in particular. We consider that the new millennium is noting the rise of a power system in the region whose characteristics are mixed with those proposed by the new post-liberal regionalism. The integration based on political, economic and military aspects, with the addiction of the ideological communion of neighboring countries, is forming an idea of a South America unity that imagines its own security and internal development in order to avoid the involvement of outside powers.
