A presença do dialeto ou da lÃngua Portunhol/Portuñol dentro de um Estado-Nação
territorialmente pouco extenso como o do Uruguai, revelou-se, com o passar do tempo, um sério
problema polÃtico. O uso desta lÃngua minoritária – surgida pelo intenso contato entre o português
falado no Rio Grande do Sul e o espanhol do Uruguai – relaciona-se à ideia de “déficit linguÃsticoâ€,
convicção que se tornou comum entre os falantes monolÃngues do território da fronteira
Uruguai/Brasil. Na realidade, o Portunhol/Portuñol identifica-se como uma variedade linguÃstica
singular, impregnada de história, temas e “sabores†fronteiriços. A nossa atenção, dentre os escritores
que usam o Portunhol/Portuñol, recai no poeta uruguaiano Fabián Severo, autor de dois
livros de poemas – Noite Nu Norte/Noche En El Norte, PoesÃa de la Frontera (2011) e Viento de
Nadie (2013), – publicados no Uruguai.
The presence of the dialect or language of Portunhol/Portuñol within a Nation-State
not so vast at the territorial level as Uruguay, has turned out to be, over time, a serious political
problem. The use of this minority language – originated from an intense contact between the
Portuguese spoken in Rio Grande do Sul and the Spanish of Uruguay – relates to the idea of “linguistic
deficitâ€, a conviction that has become common among monolingual speakers of the border
territory of Uruguay/ Brazil. In fact, the Portunhol/Portuñol is identified as a unique linguistic
variety, full of history, themes, and frontier “flavoursâ€. Our attention, among the writers who use
Portunhol/Portuñol, concentrate on Uruguayan poet Fabián Severo, author of two books of poems
– Noite Nu Norte/ Noche En El Norte, PoesÃa de la Frontera (2011) and Viento de Nadie (2013), –
published in Uruguay.
