O Programa Etnomatemática é um programa de pesquisa em história e filosofia da Matemática, com implicações pedagógicas, que se situa num quadro muito amplo. Seu objetivo
maior é dar sentido a modos de saber e de fazer das várias culturas e reconhecer como e por
que grupos de indivíduos, organizados como famílias, comunidades, profissões, tribos, na-
ções e povos, executam suas práticas de natureza Matemática, tais como contar, medir, comparar, classificar. A dificuldade maior na pesquisa é a dificuldade que os pesquisadores sentem
de se liberarem da postura disciplinar e, conseqüentemente, procuram explicar e entender o
saber e o fazer de outras culturas segundo categorias próprias à Matemática Acadêmica. Inicialmente, negamos a visão simplista que uma melhor educação matemática pode, por si, melhorar a qualidade da vida e a dignidade humana. Não é suficiente. A matemática serve finalidades
duais. É, de fato, um importante instrumento para melhorar a qualidade de vida e a dignidade
nas relações humanas. Mas, ao mesmo tempo é o suporte dos instrumentos intelectuais e materiais que são próprios de uma cultura. Queremos manter o primeiro aspecto dessa dualidade,
isto é, a matemática a serviço da qualidade de vida e da dignidade humanas, que são conseqü-
ência dos valores de uma cultura. Mas ao mesmo tempo reconhece-se a necessidade de uma
matemática que serve a objetivos ligados ao cotidiano. O grande desafio é como ensinar práticas e idéias da cultura dominante sem destruir os valores da cultura original. O Programa
Etnomatemática procura responder a esse desafio.

The Ethnomathematics Program is a mathematics and philosophy research program,
which has pedagogical implications and is situated within a very large framework. Its major
objective is to make sense of knowing and doing ways of several cultures and to acknowledge
how and why groups of individuals organized as families, communities, professions, tribes,
nations and peoples carry out their Mathematical nature practices such as counting, measuring,
comparing, and classifying. The greatest difficulty in this kind of research is the difficulty that
researches feel as far as freeing themselves from a disciplinary attitude is concerned.
Consequently, they intend to explain and understand the knowing and doing of other cultures
according to categories that are specific to academic mathematics. Firstly, we reject the simplistic
view that a better mathematics education can improve itself life quality and human dignity.
This is not sufficient. Mathematics serves dual purposes. It is, in fact, an important instrument
to improve life quality and dignity in human relations. However, at the same time it is the support of intellectual and material instruments that are proper of a culture. We want to maintain
the first aspect of this duality, that is, mathematics in service of human life quality and dignity,
which are consequences of the values of a culture. Also, we recognize the necessity of a
mathematics that serves objectives linked to daily routines. The biggest challenge here is how
to teach practices and ideas of the dominant culture without destroying the values of the original
culture. The Ethnomathematics Program intends to respond to this challenge.
