This paper shows the contributions and the limits of civil birth and death
records to historical studies. I will explain the difficulties of its implementation in
Brazil, from the Empire until its implementation during the First Republic, as well as
demonstrate the possibilities of analyzing these sources. Thus, as a case study, I will use
the post-abolition period to assess the limits and contributions of the use of such data.
