O objetivo deste artigo é apontar de modo interpretativo o perfil da personagem Flora, do penúltimo romance de Machado de Assis Esaú e Jacó, na perspectiva das características literárias correspondentes ao Simbolismo, principalmente, no que concerne ao caráter nefelibata elaborado para descrever a identidade feminina a priori, silenciada e indecisa apresentada por ela e, como seucomportamento contribui para promover uma ação de resistência ao patriarcado, sobretudo em relação à obrigatoriedade do casamento. Para tanto, a pesquisa foi realizada com base em revisões de literatura de determinados conceitos acerca desse movimento estético, a partir de diferentes pressupostos teóricos, a fim de alicerçar a argumentação no decorrer do estudo que se propôs ler a personagem, pertencente a um texto da segunda fase do escritor (realista), como simbolista.
The aim of this article is to interpret the profile of the character Flora, from Machado de Assis' penultimate novel Esaú e Jacó, from the perspective of the literary characteristics corresponding to Symbolism, especially with regard to the nefelibata character elaborated to describe the a priori, silenced and indecisive female identity presented by her and how her behavior contributes to promoting an action of resistance to patriarchy, especially in relation to the obligation of marriage. To this end, the research was based on literature reviews of certain concepts about this aesthetic movement, based on different theoretical assumptions, in order to support the argument throughout the study that proposed reading the character, belonging to a text from the writer's second phase (realist), as symbolist.
