O artigo se baseia em dois diferentes contextos
etnográficos que têm em comum a utilização de
meios tecnológicos de captação e transmissão de
imagens: a videovigilância policial no Rio de Janeiro e a
circulação de flagrantes amadores na internet. Discuto
a relação entre homens e máquinas na formação
das redes sociotécnicas que compõem a tecnologia
digital e o imaginário que o acompanha, em particular
nas relações de poder estabelecidas entre humanos
e objetos tecnológicos. É também problematizada
a realização de trabalho de campo no ciberespaço,
caracterizado pela mutabilidade, a hipertextualidade e
a superabundância de informações.
The article Socio-technical Eyes and Mediations: Video
Surveillance and Video Voyeurism is based on two
distinct ethnographic contexts which share the common
use of video capture and transmission technology: police
video surveillance in Rio de Janeiro and the circulation
of amateur voyeur films on the internet. It discusses the
man-machine relationship in the formation of socio-technical
networks that compose digital technology and the
public’s imagination that follows, particularly the power
relations established between humans and technological
objects. The article also tackles the issue of performing
fieldwork in cyberspace, characterised by changeable,
hypertext-like and overabundant information.
