O presente artigo discute o papel das irmandades de leigos, sobretudo as Ordens Terceiras, na constituição social da Capitania de Minas Gerais na segunda metade do século XVIII. Para isso, apresentamos um balanço historiográfico sobre o tema e os cotejamos com os Estatutos que regeram a Ordem Terceira de São Francisco de Mariana durante o século XVIII. O objetivo é demonstrar que, em Minas colonial, as Ordens terceiras constituÃam-se como espaços de vivência religiosa, mas, também, como importante espaço de sociabilidade e poder em uma sociedade permeada por práticas sociais oriundas do Antigo Regime português.
This article discusses the role played by the brotherhoods of seculars, specially the Third Orders in the second half of the 18th century. In order to do that, we present an historical overview on the subject and compare them with the Statutes which ruled the Third Order of Saint Francis in Mariana during the 18th century. The objective is to show that, during the colonial times, the Third Orders in Minas Gerais were not only constituted as spaces for religious experiences, but also as an important space of socializing and power, within a society which was permeated by social procedures from the portuguese Ancient Regime.
